A mechanical Actuator- Hydraulic Cylinder

A Hydraulic Cylinder is a mechanical actuator (an actuator is a mechanical device for moving or controlling a mechanism or a system) that is used to give a unidirectional force through a unidirectional stroke. It is also called linear hydraulic motor. It is mainly used in engineering vehicles and other mechanical applications. Important functions of a hydraulic cylinder are pulling or pushing in engineering applications like in machine tools, earth moving equipments, construction equipments and space applications.

We can see the application of hydraulic cylinder in trucks, cranes, and tractor. Anything that gets lifted, pushed, pulled, dug, crushed etc by these construction equipments is possible due to the hydraulic cylinder. Other use of hydraulic cylinder is that it is used in car jacks, fixed on forklifts, elevators and excavators in buildings. Basically there are two models of hydraulic cylinders generally used in industries: tie rod style cylinders and welded body style cylinders. The tie rod hydraulic cylinder contains threaded steel rods attached to either end of the cylinder barrel. This type of cylinder is used in heavy-duty industrial applications. Other is welded body cylinder which has no steel rods as it has no steel rods; a welded body cylinder is much smaller than a tie rod cylinder and is used in smaller machinery mainly in construction machinery.
